Ans.  'I' in this story is a 15- years old boy . He is an experienced and a successful thief . His targets had been his trusting employers . He changed his name every month to escape catch .

Qus.2 Why was the thief grateful to Anil ?
Ans. Hari felt grateful to Anil because the latter promised to teach him to read and write all the sentences .

Qus.3 Why did he want to become an educated man ?
Ans.  Hari wanted to become an educated man because he thought that education would make him rich , great and good man .

Qus.4 What was Anil's job ? What did he usually do with the money he earned ?
Ans. Anil was an author . He used to write for magazines . He received payment irregularly .He would go out and celebrate when ever he got a cheque . He could not keep money for his keen days .

Qus.5 How did he think Anil would react when he discovered the theft ?Why did he think so ?
Ann. Hari thought that Anil on discovering his loss of money would become sad for a moment . He would be be shocked to find that Hari had broken his trust  he had reposed in him .

Ans. Hari could have boarded the Lucknow Express and got away with the money . But he decided to return to Anil . He felt it was a n easy matter to steal and get caught . But education could make him a big , clever and respected man .

Ans. Hari noted that he had been forgiven for his  offence of stealing the money . This gave him real happiness and the smile came automatically with out any effort .

Ans. Hari Singh was a fifteen years old boy . But in this story he has been presented as a well experienced and skilful thief . He had a great knowledge of human behaviour . He knew that simple looking persons could be robbed easily . He was perfect in telling lies . He robbed Anil who trusted him . In the end , he realised his mistake . So , he was an interesting character .

Ans. Anil is a young man of 25th . He is tall and learn . He is kind and easy going . He has a very big heart . He accepts the narrator who is a thief . Thief works for him . Anil treats him nicely . He teaches him how to read and write . The thief does small things for Anil . Anil brings a small bundle of notes one day . The thief steals it . But he comes back . He accepts the thief because the thief is now changed . Anil gives him a fifty rupee note . Thus , Anil is a great man . He changes a thief into a good lad .

Ans. The thief makes friendship with Anil as he wanted a piece to live in . He also wanted to work for Anil . Anil kept him with him . But the thief was after all a thief . One day a small bundle of notes attracted the thief . Anil slept and he stole the money to go to Lucknow . But he did not go there . There came a change in his heart . He returned to Anil's room . He placed the money back under the mattress . Anil knew what had happened . He accepted the thief and patted him with affection .
